What Are Elders?

Elders are central to our leadership at Parkway. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Head of His church (Eph. 1:22; 5:23; Col. 1:18). Jesus is the Chief Shepherd of each local congregation (1 Pet. 5:4; Heb. 13:20). As Head, Jesus calls qualified men (1 Tim. 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–9) to care for and shepherd His blood-bought people as elders (Acts 20:28; 1 Pet. 5:1–4). These men are called by God and chosen by the congregation to serve alongside the Senior Pastor to shepherd and oversee the church.

What are Deacons?

Deacons are essential to the health of Parkway Baptist Church. The early church recognized two offices in Christ’s church––elders and deacons (Phil. 1:1). While elders set the direction for the congregation and serve them by leading, deacons lead the church in service (Acts 6:1–7). Good deacons are like spiritual ninjas—they labor in the background and are frequently unnoticed. Their service frees the elders to devote themselves to prayer, the ministry of the Word, and shepherding the congregation. These men are called by God and chosen by the congregation to be leading servants in His church (1 Timothy 3:8–13).
